🇸🇬🟢 Low friction

Singapore

🛂 Student's Pass; requires acceptance at an approved institution (public universities/polytechnics get the smoothest path; private-school admits face tighter conditions), school-driven SOLAR registration, and in-person pass collection.

🎓 Stay after study: No dedicated post-study 'graduate visa' — a job offer is needed immediately, after which the employer applies for an Employment Pass (qualifying salary raised to roughly SGD 5,600+/month general, ~SGD 6,200+ for financial-services roles, effective January 2025) or S Pass. There is no buffer/grace year to job-hunt visa-free.
💸 ₹10-16L/yr (expensive overall, but on-campus/shared housing keeps it somewhat controllable)Details →
🇳🇱🟢 Low friction

Netherlands

🛂 MVV entry visa plus residence permit, usually arranged by the university itself (most Dutch institutions are official sponsors and handle much of the paperwork); proof-of-funds benchmark around EUR 13,000+/yr.

🎓 Stay after study: Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) residence permit: 12 months to find qualifying work or start a business, with fewer restrictions than a standard work permit during that year. Unaffected so far by the intake-limiting reforms described below.
💸 ₹10-15L/yr (Amsterdam pricier; Eindhoven/Delft/Groningen more affordable)Details →
🇭🇰🟢 Low friction

Hong Kong

🛂 Student visa/entry permit arranged through the sponsoring institution (Form ID 995A submitted by the university to Immigration Department) — no separate embassy interview.

🎓 Stay after study: IANG (Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates) — 24 months stay-back with no job offer required to apply, one of the most flexible in Asia.
💸 ₹13-18L/yr (among the priciest cities in Asia; housing is the big cost driver)Details →
🇦🇪🟢 Low friction

UAE

🛂 University-sponsored student residence visa (1-year, renewable with enrolment) — no separate embassy visa process from India beyond normal entry.

🎓 Stay after study: Golden Visa for outstanding students — typically GPA 3.8+ from an accredited university (top-ranking high-school graduates with 95%+ marks get a shorter 5-year track) — up to 10 years, no sponsor needed; otherwise a standard job-seeker visa of up to 6 months post-graduation.
💸 ₹11-16L/yr (Dubai runs higher; Abu Dhabi/Sharjah somewhat cheaper)Details →
🇮🇳🟢 Low friction

India

🛂 N/A — domicile. Admission via JEE/NEET/CUET/CAT/university-specific entrance exams; NRI/foreign quota seats available for applicants coming from schooling abroad.

🎓 Stay after study: N/A — no visa constraint. Campus placements are the functional 'post-study' transition: 90-100% placement at top IITs/IIMs, with packages ranging ₹8-50L+ (tier-1) down to ₹4-8L at mid-tier colleges.
💸 ₹3-8L/yr (metro tier-1 cities like Mumbai/Bengaluru/Delhi run ₹6-8L; tier-2/3 cities ₹3-5L)Details →
🇬🇧🟡 Moderate

UK

🛂 Student visa (post-Tier 4); needs a CAS from a licensed sponsor, proof of funds (tuition + up to 9 months' maintenance), TB test certificate (mandatory from India), and biometrics enrolment.

🎓 Stay after study: Graduate Route: currently 2 years post-study work visa (3 years for PhD graduates), with no employer sponsorship required to activate it — but the May 2025 Immigration White Paper proposes cutting this to 18 months as new Immigration Rules phase in through 2025-26. Confirm the current duration close to your actual visa grant date rather than assuming the 2-year figure holds.
💸 ₹10-18L/yr (London well above other UK cities)Details →
🇩🇪🟡 Moderate

Germany

🛂 National (Type D) student visa or 'Student Applicant' visa; requires university admission (plus an APS certificate for most Indian applicants applying to public universities), a blocked account (Sperrkonto, roughly EUR 11,900-13,000+/yr — this minimum is revised almost every year, so confirm the current figure before applying), and health insurance.

🎓 Stay after study: 18-month job-seeker residence permit after graduation to find qualifying work, convertible to an EU Blue Card or standard work permit once employed.
💸 ₹9-14L/yr (public-university tuition is often near-zero, so this is mostly living cost; Munich/Frankfurt pricier)Details →
🇫🇷🟡 Moderate

France

🛂 VLS-TS (long-stay student visa) via mandatory Campus France 'Études en France' procedure; validated as a residence permit via OFII — now largely a digital/online formality for most nationalities (the in-person medical visit was dropped for most student permit holders during 2020-23 digitalisation) rather than a mandatory in-person appointment for everyone.

🎓 Stay after study: APS (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) — 12 months job-search/business-creation visa for Master's grads, convertible to a work permit on job offer.
💸 ₹9-14L/yr (Paris ₹14-16L; regional cities ₹9-11L)Details →
🇮🇪🟡 Moderate

Ireland

🛂 Non-EEA 'D' study visa (courses over 3 months) plus mandatory Irish Residence Permit (IRP) registration after arrival; since 2024-25 your college/course must appear on the International Education Mark (IEM) list — the successor to the old ILEP — to be visa-eligible at all.

🎓 Stay after study: Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G): 12 months for Level 8 (Bachelor's), 24 months for Master's/PhD to seek employment.
💸 ₹10-15L/yr (Dublin ₹14-16L)Details →
🇯🇵🟡 Moderate

Japan

🛂 'College Student' visa, gated by a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) that your institution applies for on your behalf before you apply at the consulate.

🎓 Stay after study: Standard route: 'Designated Activities' job-seeker visa for up to 1 year total (initial 6 months + one 6-month renewal) to find work matching your degree. Separately, the J-Find visa (since 2023) lets graduates — within the last 5 years — of a narrow list of ~100 highly ranked overseas universities job-hunt or start a business in Japan for up to 2 years without a sponsoring employer; check current eligibility lists carefully, as most Indian universities aren't on them.
💸 ₹9-13L/yr (Tokyo ₹13-15L)Details →
🇰🇷🟡 Moderate

South Korea

🛂 D-2 (degree study) or D-4 (language/exchange) visa via the Korean embassy/consulate in India, based on an admission letter.

🎓 Stay after study: D-10 job-seeking visa, up to 6 months and renewable to roughly 2 years total.
💸 ₹8-12L/yr (Seoul ₹11-13L)Details →
🇺🇸🔴 High scrutiny

USA

🛂 F-1 visa; requires I-20 from a SEVP-certified school, SEVIS I-901 fee (~$350), DS-160 form, visa fee, and a mandatory in-person interview at a US Embassy/Consulate in India.

🎓 Stay after study: OPT: 12 months for any major, plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension for STEM degrees — up to 3 years total work authorization without employer sponsorship. Both remain legally in force, but have faced repeated litigation and reform proposals over the years, so treat as stable-for-now rather than permanently guaranteed.
💸 ₹12-22L/yr (NYC/Bay Area/Boston at the top end, Midwest/South cities lower)Details →
🇨🇦🔴 High scrutiny

Canada

🛂 Study Permit; needs a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution, proof of funds (GIC route ~CAD 20,635 or bank statements), biometrics, and — since 2024 — a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for most programs.

🎓 Stay after study: Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), length tied to program duration (up to 3 years) — but 2024-25 reforms restricted PGWP eligibility for many public-private 'curriculum licensing' college programs and tied diploma-level eligibility to specific fields of study; these restrictions carried into the 2025-26 intake unchanged.
💸 ₹9-16L/yr (Toronto/Vancouver highest; smaller Ontario/Atlantic Canada cities notably cheaper)Details →
🇦🇺🔴 High scrutiny

Australia

🛂 Subclass 500 Student visa; needs a CoE, the 2024-introduced 'Genuine Student' statement (replaced the old GTE test), Overseas Student Health Cover, and proof of funds.

🎓 Stay after study: Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485): now capped at applicants under 35 at time of application (cut from 50 in the 2024 reforms) for the main streams; 2-3 years for bachelor's/master's graduates (durations were cut in the 2024 reforms for non-regional study), up to 4 years for PhD; studying at a regional campus still attracts bonus duration.
💸 ₹11-18L/yr (Sydney/Melbourne pricier; regional campuses cheaper and carry PR bonus points)Details →
🇨🇭🔴 High scrutiny

Switzerland

🛂 National (Type D) student visa; requires unconditional admission, proof of funds (~CHF 21,000-24,000/yr benchmark), and — critically for non-EU applicants — evidence of intent to leave Switzerland after studies.

🎓 Stay after study: A 6-month, non-renewable residence permit to search for qualifying work — the job must be found within that window.
💸 ₹18-28L/yr (one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in, before tuition)Details →
🇳🇿🔴 High scrutiny

New Zealand

🛂 Fee Paying Student Visa, requiring a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), financial evidence, and (for degree-level study) demonstrated genuine intent.

🎓 Stay after study: Post-Study Work Visa — up to 3 years for Bachelor's degree (Level 7) and above (in place since the 2018 reforms). The already-narrow 1-year PSW eligibility for sub-degree/Level 4-6 qualifications has been further restricted since 2024, and many such courses no longer lead to any post-study work visa at all. Confirm PSW eligibility for your exact programme before enrolling, not after.
